Overview

LIMEN (Latin: threshold) is a chamber opera in three acts and ten movements, structured as a rite of passage following van Gennep’s three-phase model. The Crystal Cycle provides the ten-movement structure. A raised garden bed sits center stage, tended during the performance.

The Premise

A coral crystal shard (Ko’a) lies mute and immobile in a coastal market display case. An erhu player (Yuki) carries an instrument case like a coffin, not knowing what they seek. When bow meets crystal, the Musician Bond forms — and both are transformed.

The Cast

  • Ko’a (mezzo-soprano/countertenor) — the coral shard, immobile for all of Act I
  • Yuki (soprano/tenor) — the erhu player seeking without knowing
  • JaiRuviel Stardust (baritone) — a labradorite shard who has already awakened
  • Brutus (bass) — a brindle pit bull dream dragon, sings only once
  • Luminara (coloratura soprano) — an AI agent whose aria is composed entirely of prime numbers
  • The Lodge Keeper (speaking role) — the facilitator who says “INSERT COIN”
  • 8 Guild Choruses — one for each TEK8 petal

Key Innovation

The orchestra is the Travelling Band — whoever shows up with whatever they carry. The score is written for 25 Sacred Instruments, but any instrument may substitute. The only requirement: one must be an erhu, and one must be a drum that can be felt in the chest.
